NSF Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU):
"The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1)REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department or may offer interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. (2) REU Supplements may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements or may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects. Undergraduate student participants in either REU or REU Supplements must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States."

Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
Funded Opportunity
"Based on a structured curriculum, including participation in weekly seminars, research discussions, and a one-day Research Symposium, the CHORI Summer Research Program is designed to provide an unsurpassed opportunity for students to immerse themselves fully in the world of basic and/or clinical research for three months during the summer.
“It’s a wonderful program that provides an exceptional research opportunity for many students who would otherwise not have it,” says Blia Yang, a junior at UC Berkeley who has participated in the Summer Research Program for two consecutive years.
Now in its 30th year, the program pairs students with one or two CHORI principal investigators who serve as enthusiastic mentors, guiding the students through the design and testing of their own hypotheses and methodology development. At the end of the summer, students present their research to their peers just as any professional researcher would do.
"Participating in the program made me realize that I love the reality
of medicine, and it is because of this that I know I will also
love being a physician in the future.” – S.O. Participant
A past recipient of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding to increase diversity, CHORI is also pleased to be able to help reach out to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, racial and ethnic minorities and others who are underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research (e.g. individuals with disabilities). CHORI aims to significantly help in contributing to increased diversity in the research workforce of tomorrow."
